It is with a heavy heart that I acknowledge the passing of Don Rose. Don and I went way back to our younger years growing up in Fortune building cabins, trouting and fishing (on the Barbara Fletcher). We both went our separate ways in life but we always held that early connection in our memories.
Both Lynette and I would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to Jean and their family.

Dear Jean and Family
What can I say about your dearly beloved Don.
A man of integrity, honesty, hard worker and dedicated family man all of his days.
I am lucky and blessed to say that I knew Don Rose and considered him a friend. My first encounter with Don was with Max back in the millennium year of 2000. Dons smile and especially his Harty laugh was so infections which immediately made you warm to his strong personality. I spent time not just talking about his lifetimes vocation of fishing. I considered myself lucky enough to have spent a couple of occasions out at sea “long lining” for cod fish with Don, Hubert and Roe, whilst being offered some of the those ghastly cheeks and tongues to take home for a fry up, naturally I declined , how could you eat such parts of a fish, when the fillets were so big and tasty.
Don was not just a professional fisherman he was a crafted carpenter and a dandy gardener also. I shall never forget when staying in Eldon street, Don was such a good help, in not just preparing the vegetable garden but also the continued care and maintenance, through to the harvest of the vegetables. I one particular occasion I shall never forget Don taking time ensuring the seed Tatties were being planted with perfections and the appropriate intervals, at the same time his Buddy Max was throwing them in the bushes to avoid bending over to plant the valuable seed tatties …. Don and I could do nothing other than laugh, this story has been told in the shed many times over and will no doubt be told with even slight exaggeration in future shed parties.
Time spent in the company of Don, Max, Gord, Roe in either Max’s shed or Don’s Cabin, there was never a dull moment, one always trying to get a joke or a trick over the other, a battle of wits and all of in in fun and in good spirit, Don always starting the nonsense of, or very much in the middle of it all (normally plenty spirit of the liquid variety)
On the last occasion I meat Don, it was during his vacation to Scotland in July 2018 which I believe he and Jean enjoyed very much, At this time it was my turn to reciprocate the kindness and affection shown to me upon my arrival to Fortune Newfoundland. During his trip to Scotland we spent several days at sea fishing for Lobster, Don as always was hands on taking active part in a fishery he was well acquainted and familiar with. We walked for many miles on the North of Scotland Shore line which he certainly enjoyed. Our day out at the annual farmers show, (Blackisle farmers society annual show) I know for sure Don loved every minute of the show from the different farm animals, cows, sheep, horses, even hens and ducks to the prized vegetables on plentiful display,
Our day out to Dalmore whiskey Distillery touring the internall workings of an operating distillery through to the finally event of actually tasting the various types of whiskey distilled over the past 100 years, during the tasting event which was another great occasion, whereby Don and I Drank and enjoyed the different scotch whiskeys whereas his buddy Max was giving them away as they did not compare to his beloved Miquelon brew, boy did Don Laugh.
Similar to Newfoundland where the bounty of good food is plentiful, where we frequently ate fresh lobster, Prawns from the sea, Steak, Lamb chops from the land, good Scotch whiskey from the local distilleries. The final part of Don and Jean Visit to Scotland was a visit to a local museum in capital city Inverness. Don, when the offer given, was first in the line volunteering to be dressed up in full Scottish Highland dress, including Kilt and Tartan plaid. Photographic evidence of this day and other during their Scotland trip I am sure still holds dearly as fantastic memory of life before COVID and the devastating illness that so rapidly took over Dons Body
To conclude all I can say is how sorry and humbled I am to be writing this tribute to the Rose Family from someone that can, and shall continue to remember the good times, the fun times of having the pleasure to have known Don Rose for the 22 years that I had such an honour of doing so and can honestly say goodby to such a dear friend that lived a full and honest life during the period was spared to be with us.
Very best regards

So sad to hear of the passing of Don. I enjoyed our time spent together and especially my annual fishing trip on the Freeman Gordon with the family . Don had a weak stomach and would urge at the first sign of a rotten fish . We told jokes, stories and lies all day and laughed so hard our stomachs hurt. He was the first one to write me a reference for the military which started my career. He will always hold a special place in my heart. RIP my friend .
