Obituary of Hubert Maxwell Slaney

It is with great sadness the family of Hubert Slaney of Point May announce his passing at Burin Peninsula Health Care Center on May 29th at the age of 79 years. Leaving to mourn his wife of 60 years Shirley; sons Stuart (Emma), Hubert Jr. (Joanne), Danny (Vanessa), Duane (Cynthia), and Greg (Trina); daughters Betty (Edward Boland), Shirley (James Grant), Kim (James Robere), Denise (Jason Walsh), and Theresa (Terry Hillier); loving family pet Happy; 28 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; brother Ron (Jennie); sisters Marion Cousins, Blanche Fitzpatrick (Loyola), and Margaret Hillier (Les); sisters-in-law Bernadette Slaney, Marie Slaney, Emma Best Philomena, Beth Hillier (Aub), Rowena Hillier (Frank), Melinda Collins (Kevin), Darlene Murphy (Charl), Carm Hillier (Les) and Barb Stacey; brothers-in-law Jim Fitzpatrick, John Stacey, William (Norma), Cecil Stacey, Gerald Stacey and Peter (Liz) plus a large circle of other family and friends. Predeceased by parents William John and Edna (Thornhill) Slaney; parents-in-law Peter and Elsie (Hewitt) Stacey; brothers Patrick, Roy, George, and William Jr.; sisters Theresa Slaney, Susie Fitzpatrick, and Mary Slaney; brothers-in-law Anthony Cousins, Leonard Stacey, Marcel Stacey, Gregory Benteau, Angus Boland, Cyril Best and Michael Stacey; sisters-in-law Isabella Stacey, Mary Boland, Joan Stacey and Lucy Stacey. In Keeping with Hubert’s wishes cremation has take place. A Celebration of Hubert’s Life is planned for a later date. Hubert was a fisherman and was a helper at Fortune Light House. He loved music, especially the guitar and to laugh and have fun. One of his great joys was to dress up and make people laugh. When you visited him he always wanted to give you something nobody left empty handed. He always wanted to make sure you had a lunch and left with a full belly. At one point he was Mayor of Point May; he started up the Beaver program and was involved in Cadets. He will always be remembered for his giving ways and he would do without for anyone. His family will hold his memories in their hearts forever. To honor his life the most important thing he left behind was his wonderful family who will continue to follow his traditions and kindness in his memory. Forever loved and remembered.
