I remember when my brother-in-law Ray spoke at his Mom's 65th birthday celebration. He said one of the things he learned from his mother was "if something is worth having it's worth working for, and you'll feel a whole lot better about having it afterwards." I believe that Ray learned that lesson well. I expect that she endeavoured to instill this and other good values in all of her children.
