Obituary of Arthur Downey

Passed away suddenly on 16 July 2020, at the age of 74, Arthur Downey (born 28 July 1945). Arthur was a proud, life-long resident of Grand Bank. He started his work life at 15 working at the fish plant and spent more than 40 years on deep sea fishing trawlers sailing out of various ports in Newfoundland. He was an avid member of his church and was enrolled as a senior soldier since 1998. He served the Salvation Army as an usher, member of the men's fellowship and he often collected for the Christmas Kettle. He attended summer church camp and enjoyed the comraderie developed with his friends in Christ. Arthur loved his family. He was eagerly awaiting the birth of his newest Great Grandchild. He was recognized in the community as a gentle and kind man and was known for his love of cars and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn Smith Downey; son Rick (Selina), son Fred, Daughter Jackie (Alan) Grandchildren Chris (Rosemary), Amanda (Brian), Renee, Dylan, Layne and Samantha (Jon). Great Grandchildren: Jade and Naomi Siblings: Mary, May (Ralph), Sally, Marina (Harry), Belinda (Joe), Lloyd (Rosalind), Wayne (Ruby) Predeceased by his parents Minnie and Phillip, Sisters Jessie and Florence and Brother Freddie. Following government legislation due to the current pandemic, a private visitation will take place at Serenity Funeral Home, Grand Bank Saturday Visitation 7-9, Family will be receiving visitors in groups of 5. followed by a private funeral service from Salvation Army Citadel , Grand Bank with interment following at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Grand Bank.
