Obituary of Shirley Margaret Grandy

Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with profound sadness that the family of the late Shirley Margaret (nee Hardiman) Grandy announce her passing at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre on June 3, 2026, in her 83rd year.

Shirley leaves to mourn her son Craig Grandy (Elaine Noseworthy Grandy), daughters Angela Grandy (Dan Daigle), Kimberley Grandy and Jennifer Grandy (Rodney Clarke); grandchildren Tara (Trevor), Taylor (Amber), Samantha (Matthew), Adam (Katera) and William; great-grandchildren Carter, Kenley, Cohen, Emma, Noah, Maria, Crew, Kelsea and Madelyn; siblings Rowena Caines, Almeda Grandy, Roy Hardiman, Marsh Hardiman (Joan), Dorothy Cluett, Cora Price and Marilyn Smith (Peter); sisters-in-law Judy Cooper (George), Aleta Grandy and Meta Marsh (Cedric) and a large circle of family and friends.

Shirley is predeceased by her husband Stephan, parents Frank and Hilda Hardiman, parents-in-law William and Marian Grandy, sisters Clara Grandy and Mildred Harris, brothers-in-law Uriah Caines, Earl Grandy, Curtis Grandy, Lloyd Grandy, Wayne Grandy, Rueben Cluett, Samual Harris, and George Price, and sisters-in-law Rita Hardiman and Linda Grandy.

Shirley was a devoted member of her church and enjoyed years of volunteering with St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Marystown, and St. Giles Anglican Church, Garnish, as a choir member, Sunday School teacher and ACW member touching many lives with her kindness, faith and dedication. She was a Girl Guide and Brownie leader. She was active in the early years of the Garnish Bakeapple Festival and a 20+ year member of the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre Auxiliary. Shirley said you never wanted for what you gave away. Maybe the person needed it more than you.

Shirley treasured the time she spent with her brothers and sister and especially enjoyed traveling with her sister Rowena. They had many adventures together. She also remained deeply connected to her roots in the resettled community of Point Rosie, often recalling the people, experiences and memories that helped shape her life.

While Shirley was well known for her talents as a seamstress, quilter, cook, and baker, her greatest happiness came from caring for her family as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, and she was especially known for her delicious partridgeberry pies, a treasured family favourite. There were no real recipes, only measured by if it looked, felt or tasted right. She took great pleasure in preparing her family’s favourite meals, and her husband, Steve, especially enjoyed the wonderful home-cooked meals, whether they were eaten at home or at the cabin. So much so that if he ran into anyone out around the harbour, he’d often invite them for supper. Shirley said she always put on a bit extra because she never knew when someone might drop in.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre for their compassionate care during Shirley’s final stay there. A special thank you is extended to Shirley’s homecare workers, Amanda and Angeline, for the daily care and kindness that allowed her to remain in her hometown near her family, friends and church.
