Obituary of Gerald Moulton
It’s with great sadness that the family of Gerald Moulton announces his passing on May 22, 2026 in his 80th year. Dad (Poppy) passed away peacefully at his home in Epworth surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Predeceased by his loving wife Mabel, his parents George and Lena, and his sisters Brenda (Ted), and Joyce (Richard), he leaves to mourn his daughters Lana (Dave) and Sonya (Rick), and sons Steven (Patricia) and Lyndon (Jessica), grandchildren Leah (Jordan), Sarah, Sofie, Brennan, Joel, and Joanna, great granddaughter Blair, and brother Calvin (Pat). Dad also leaves behind a large extended family of in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, and a host of friends who loved and respected him and will dearly miss his presence in their lives.
Gerald was born in Burin on March 3, 1946. He grew up in a close knit family with parents and siblings who adored him and with whom he shared a special bond. Never known to shy away from speaking his mind, Gerald also never shied away from lending a helping hand. Whether his starring presence was needed in a local film or two (thank you Martine and Isaac), you needed a mooring, you needed a hug, or your waterline broke, Dad was there. He was a real-life superhero. He was respected by everyone in his community, by his auto mechanic peers in the various garages on the peninsula where he worked, by his colleagues at FPI, the Marystown Shipyard, and in the Newfoundland offshore. He also carried fond memories of his time and friends in the RCAF as a young firefighter and was very proud of his service.
For much of his life, Gerald loved spending time on the ocean - whether cod fishing, snorkelling, or scuba diving for scallops or ship wrecks, Mr. Gerald’s boat coming in and out of the harbour was a common sight and a source of great enjoyment for him and his family, who often tagged along. He also loved a good ramble in the woods and knew the hills and valleys, all around Epworth and beyond, better than just about anyone in the cove. He never failed to have a story to share, if you were lucky enough to tag along with him on one of those outings. He was also a musician and used his love of music to connect the miles between NL and BC with his brother Cal.
Gerald adored children and they adored him. He could put a baby to sleep, get them to laugh or to eat their vegetables like a pro. He had a way of connecting with people of all ages that was real and honest and if you created a bond with our dad, you carried that bond with you across time and distance.
Over his lifetime, Dad gained much joy from his pets, of which there were many. We’d like to give a special mention to Ollie and Shilo who provided great comfort to both him and Mother in more recent years. Most recently, his new pup Annie filled his days with unconditional love and was his final source of furry joy. She will be a beautiful reminder to us each day of how the love of a pet can heal.
In keeping with his wishes, Dad has been cremated.
Our families will gladly welcome those who would like to shed a tear or share a story of our father on Sunday May 24 at Serenity Funeral home in Salt Pond, Burin from 11-2.
His ashes will be scattered in Epworth at a later date, where family and friends can come together to celebrate his life.
Dad will be missed by so many but he would not want you to feel sadness in his passing but rather joy in knowing he left this world with peace in his heart.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to all his friends and neighbours who offered him extra love and support over the last few months. Please know that he appreciated each and every one of you.
We would also like to extend thanks to the kind staff at Pikes and at NL Health Services for your compassion and care in dad’s time of need.
Epworth has lost a fine soul but we are all the better for having known and loved him. In recognition of Dad’s love of animals, our family will gladly accept donations for the Burin Peninsula SPCA in his memory.
Under the gentle care of Serenity Funeral Home. We listen, we learn, we walk with you."
A father is one of life’s greatest gifts —
steady, irreplaceable, and often underappreciated
until the years have quietly slipped by.
His love might not always be loud, but it’s steady…
found in the way he shows up, provides, teaches, and protects.
For many of us in our 30s, 40s, and beyond,
we begin to see our fathers through different eyes.
We realize the sacrifices they made, the wisdom tucked in their few words,
and the way they quietly shaped the people we’ve become.
Value your father while you still can. Because no matter how far life takes you,
there will never be another soul quite like his.
