Obituary of Matthew Legge

Please share a memory of Matthew to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Peacefully, our beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather, passed away on Thursday May 15, 2025, we announce the passing of Matthew Stafford Legge at the age of 75. Matthew was a remarkable man who lived a life filled with strength and resilience. He departed this world at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Matthew was the beloved husband of Sarah for 47 years, a devoted father to Jennifer Fewer (Colin) Sparwood BC, Pamela Legge (Jason Stapleton father of Megan and Riley) Burin, NL and a cherished grandfather Riley, Madison,  Megan and Kenzie.  He was a loving brother to Georgina Legge, Bert Legge (Elizabeth), Howard Legge, John Legge, Agnes Moulton (Baxter), Wilma Legge (Melvin), David Legge, Jacqueline and sister-in-law Violet Legge, and a large circle of other family and friends.

Matthew is predeceased by his mother Rosalie, brothers Malcolm, Ronald, sister Hazel, parents-in-law John Sr.  & Veronica O’Keefe, sisters-in-law Judy Hodder, Katherine Legge, brothers-in-law John O’Keefe Jr. and Jerome O’Keefe.

Matthew worked as a fisherman throughout his life, until  he couldn’t do it anymore. He was a lover of fishing in his boat, “Pam & Jenny II” and an avid card player,  especially playing 45’s with his card buddies. Matthew put his whole heart into everything he did and was the hardest worker around. He was full of gratitude and generosity, and was the first to offer a helping hand.

But most importantly, Matthew was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. With hard work and commitment, he and Sarah built a beautiful life together. Nothing gave Matthew greater pride than watching his daughters thrive – he was their biggest cheerleader and fiercest protector. And then when his grandchildren arrived, he became the proudest Papa in the world! Nothing brought him greater pleasure than spending time with each of his grandchildren.

Matthew’s memory will forever remain a source of inspiration and strength for all who knew him.

Special thanks to the caregivers who took such good care of him, Mary, Cynthia & Jeff and special thanks to his fishermen friends and his card buddies.

In keeping with Matthew’s wishes cremation will take place.

Celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2PM with inurnment following at Bethany United cemetery Burin Bay Arm.

As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the family and they will chose a charity that was dear to Matthew’s heart.
