Obituary of Russell Inkpen

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Eugene Russell Inkpen, of Lewin's Cove, announces his death on Thursday, November 17th, 2016 at the Burin Peninsula Hospital at the age of 75 years after a year long battle with cancer. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 48 years Sharon (Oliver), sons Todd (Michelle Johnson), St. John's; Brad (Michlyn), Casselman, Ont; daughters Tracey (Tom Pouch), Embrun, Ont; Doris (Terry) Clarke, Hants Harbour. Grandchildren Trent (Laura) Clarke, Travis Clarke (Megan Pynn), Travis Inkpen (Angela Sutherland), Zachary, Emma, Caitlyn, & Raina Inkpen, and Rachel & Hannah Pouch; step-grandsons James & Eric Johnson, and great-granddaughter Ava Clarke. Also left to mourn are brothers Arnold (Valetta,) Grand Beach; Bill, Winterland; Roy, Tumbler Ridge, BC, Fraser (Elaine), Kingston, Ont.; Earl, Burin; sisters Sue (Alvin) Powell, Lethbridge, NL; Ella Appleby, Burin; sisters-in-law Mary Inkpen, Dorothy Inkpen, and Linda Marcoux. Also mourning their only brother-in-law the Oliver family of Cape Breton, N.S.; Bart (Bernadette), Cyril (Becky), Wayne (Ethel), Cotter (Margie), Dwight (Nadine), Jack (Flo), Brad (Coleen), and sister-in-law Michele Oliver. Numerous nieces & nephews from the Inkpen & Oliver families will miss their Uncle Russ. Predeceased by infant grandson Ben Pouch; parents Leonard & Reta Inkpen; stepmother Grace Inkpen; parents-in-law John & Margaret Oliver; brother-in-law Jerry Appleby; sisters-in-law Shirley Inkpen and Ada Inkpen; and nephews Jason Inkpen and Adrian Oliver. Russ served in the Canadian Armed Forces for twenty years, retiring in 1981 with the rank of Sergeant. Upon returning to his hometown of Lewin's Cove, he was employed as security at the Marystown Shipyard and Cowhead facilities from which he retired in 2004. Both before and following his retirement he took great pleasure in working on his land. Russ was a lifelong lover of the outdoors and cherished the hours spent with family and friends hunting and fishing. He was also a great curling fan, particularly in his later years, travelling to many events with his co-fans Sharon and Marilyn. As per Russ's request, there will be no wake or funeral service. Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to a reception to celebrate his life at the Lewin's Cove Community Centre from 2:00 - 4:00 on Monday, November 21st, 2016. No flowers by request. For those who wish, donations may be made in his memory to a children's charity or children's hospital. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Burin.
